Cricut - Old Truck Mailbox Decal

Image
Next up in my mission to "Cricut All The Things" was our mailbox. I started out with a couple of free truck svgs, but they needed cleaned up so much, to cut the way I wanted,  that I just went to etsy and spent $1.49 for this one.  It was worth the time it saved me to have a good image to work with.   When I uploaded this to design space, I uploaded the PNG file (instead of the html file).  Then I simply clicked on the pumpkins, and on the words, and on the pumpkin stems, to erase all of them.   Once it was all erased, I added it to my "new project" in design space, and it wanted to make it a print and cut. If I changed it to cut, it changed the tire centers to the same color.  So I chose shape, circle, and sliced the center color out of the tires. Quick and easy! That gave me the tires inserts in silver, as I wanted them. Next I added our last name, and our street number - in the elephant font. https://fontzone.net/font-details/elephant Cut our of Oracle 651 in wi

Fonts With Tails (Glyphs) Cheat Sheet

Image
Glyphs are extra characters in fonts.  For fonts like Samantha (a paid font - there is no free version) you have to use a character map to access the extra swirls. There are a few fonts, such as I Love Glitter, where you can quickly add swirls (nothing as ornate as Samantha, but still pretty!) just by adding a few characters such as * \ [ ] or ().  I call them "easy glyphs". Download all four of these cheat sheets as a pdf file, here.  If that link does not work (too much traffic) Try This One. Links to download each font are found under the photos. What Do I Need To Get Started With A New Cricut?

Image
Which Cricut Should I Buy? I use the Cricut Air 2.  The Maker, which is the model newer than the Air 2, will also cut light wood, and fabric without bonding attached. (the air 2 will cut fabric if you use an iron on bonding material on it)  That was the only real difference I know of, and I don't need to cut light wood, so I went with the Air 2.  I probably would have been fine with the Air.  I think, from what I have heard discussed on facebook groups, the only real difference is the speed  - the Air 2 cuts faster.   Cricut has a comparison of all of their current models here: https://help.cricut.com/help/cricut-explore-difference What Else Do I Need ? 1. Facebook groups and Youtube.  Because the Cricut does not come with ANY instructions.  Nada.  There is one sample project included - a simple card.  And it's amazing to see the machine make it.  But when it's done...  You will need to search out what you want to learn.  Pinterest is also helpful, for ideas.  But you will

Cricut - Which Vinyl Do I Need & Where Do I Buy It?

Image
I'm not an expert.  I'm pretty new.  This question, which vinyl do I need & where to get it, seems to be asked almost every single day on every cricut facebook group.  Below is my attempt to sort out the responses, and as I make purchases I will update with my experiences. Which Vinyl is best? www.myvinyldirect.com Where Should I Buy It? If you scroll down to the next section, I list all of my research from when I was first looking at buying vinyl online.  I've been buying for a little while now, and these are my go to favorites: HTV (for ironing on fabric) Runs around $3 a foot, anything near there and I'm usually happy with the price.  Black and White I can usually find closer to $2 a foot. http://amzn.to/2hHZWIi This is the "deal" I like to buy several colors all at once.  It's five rolls, you choose the five colors you want, for $20.  NOT the cheapest per a foot, but a nice way to get several colors. For a larger amount of a single color, this is 6

Homemade Sticky Buns

Image
Dough Recipe (This is a basic dough recipe that we use for everything from calzones to sticky buns) 1 cup hot water 1.5 T sugar 2..25 t yeast (I put all of this in one measuring cup and let sit) 3 cups of flour (maybe a bit more - start with 3 cups) 1/4 cup vegetable oil  When the yeast bubbles in the measuring cup, I dump it into the kitchen aid with the flour and oil, and mix on low with the bread hook.    Set aside in a covered bowl and let rise until double. Roll out bread dough top with melted butter (abt 1/4 of a cup) cinnamon and brown sugar Swirl together Roll into a log,  slice into 12 pieces Make the sauce: Sauce Recipe 3/4 cup butter 3/4 cup brown sugar cook until melted and starting to caramelize remove from  heat and add 1/4 cup corn syrup Pour the sauce into a 9x13 inch pan place the rolls on top of the syrup cover and let rise

All About Sweet Corn Season...

Image
This year, more than any other, we've had a lot of questions about the sweet corn.  I thought I'd try to answer them all here in one spot, for my reference as much as anyone else.  :-) What Is The Difference Between Yellow & Bicolor? We plant two variety of seed - a yellow, appropriately named "Incredible", and a bicolor, which is usually refereed to as Butter and Sugar. Dan's family has been planting the Incredible brand for may years, and we have planted it every year since we've moved here in 2004.  It is hands down my favorite.  It's non GMO, because the brand is so old it was before gmo was really a thing. The Butter and Sugar is expensive to plant.  The seed is very expensive, the corn is often buggier, and it just doesn't grow as well.  And then, in my opinion, it's really not any better than the plain yellow that I love...  but most customers want butter and sugar, because they are used to that being a sweeter corn, (Try the Incredible
