All About Sweet Corn Season...

Image
This year, more than any other, we've had a lot of questions about the sweet corn.  I thought I'd try to answer them all here in one spot, for my reference as much as anyone else.  :-) What Is The Difference Between Yellow & Bicolor? We plant two variety of seed - a yellow, appropriately named "Incredible", and a bicolor, which is usually refereed to as Butter and Sugar. Dan's family has been planting the Incredible brand for may years, and we have planted it every year since we've moved here in 2004.  It is hands down my favorite.  It's non GMO, because the brand is so old it was before gmo was really a thing. The Butter and Sugar is expensive to plant.  The seed is very expensive, the corn is often buggier, and it just doesn't grow as well.  And then, in my opinion, it's really not any better than the plain yellow that I love...  but most customers want butter and sugar, because they are used to that being a sweeter corn, (Try the Incredible ...

Raspberry Vinegar

Image
While looking at recipes on Newspapers.com, I came across this 1862 recipe, recommended for the aid of sick and wounded civil war soldiers.   "It makes an agreeable and refreshing beverage and those who desire to do something for the aid of the sick and wounded soldiers, cannot prepare anything more acceptable than a quantity of this Raspberry vinegar." It's not quite raspberry season here in Pa, but we may attempt a batch once it is.   The Shippensburg News  (Shippensburg, Pennsylvania) 05 Jul 1862, Sat  • Page 3

Farmers Almanac Dandelion Jelly

Image
First Batch, April 2017 "Jelly made from dandelions is similar in taste to spring honey. Try making some of your own with this recipe!" I was skeptical - but it truly does taste like honey!   INGREDIENTS 1 quart dandelion blossoms 2 quarts water 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 package (1 3/4 oz) powdered fruit pectin 5 1/2 cups sugar INSTRUCTIONS Pick the dandelion blossoms and rinse thoroughly. Snip stem and green collar. Boil petals in 2 quarts water for 3 minutes. Cool and strain, pressing petals with fingers to extract juice. Measure out 3 cups of dandelion liquid. Add lemon juice and powdered fruit pectin. Bring mixture to a boil (large jelly kettles work best for this). Add sugar, stirring to mix well. Continue stirring and boil mixture for 2 ½ minutes. Pour into small glasses and cover with paraffin when jelly is cool. Enjoy! (I processed mine in a water bath for 10 minutes, instead of the paraffin.  ) The Pantagraph  (Bloomington, Illinois) 01 Aug 1979, Wed  • Pa...

Pulled Pork, Using the Aldi Fresh Meat deal

Image
I'm transitioning to shopping more at Aldi, now that we don't always need the bulk amounts from Sam's club.  So of course I started this week by buying a 10lb pork roast.  Because everyone scaling back on the amount of groceries they buy should buy a 10lb pork roast.... But it was $1.49 a lb!  How can you pass that deal up?  I looked it up online to type up this post, and found this: " Every Wednesday, look for our incredible Fresh Meat Special Buy* item. When you see the sign, you'll find an extra-low price on one of our very best cuts of meat. But hurry…because at these low prices, our weekly supply is extremely limited. " I usually shop on Wednesdays, because I'm already in this area for BSF on Wednesday mornings.  I can't believe I've never noticed this before?  I really should be more observant.  :-) A few months back I had made this recipe, from Kevin & Amanda .  It's called Perfect Roast Pork.  And it was good.  But I didn't t...

Not A Pinterest Baker Makes Lemon Blueberry Cake

Image
Working from the recipe found here: http://sallysbakingaddiction.com/2014/02/09/lemon-blueberry-layer-cake/ Step 1 - Check the Ingredients   I don't have buttermilk, but that's easy to make.  (I do have fresh from the dairy milk, and a bag of lemons from Aldi) Find that our daughter does not like the cherry cream cheese I bought at Wengers, because it was super cheap, on her bagels, she she used some of the plain cream cheese I bought for the icing.   Check the pan cabinet.  I have a collection of stackable wedding cake pans that I bought for $1.50 at a yard sale and keep, but will likely never, ever, use.  None of them are the same size.   I have two wilsons cake pans from a cake decorating class my daughter and I took for fun 7 years ago.  I know it was 7 years ago, because facebook just showed me the reminder photo this week.  I didn't need facebook to remind me that we really, really sucked at cake decorating.  And that these pans pr...
